Fundraiser

Your Chaffey-BurkePAC is offering two great fundraisers just in time for the holiday season: Klean Kanteen stainless steel water bottles and Cineplex movie tickets.

Both fundraisers were approved at the last PAC meeting and are part of our overall fundraising plan to offer parents a few select items for purchase during the year, in addition to our major fundraising event, e.g., the Walk-a-thon. Watch for more information about future fundraising events on our PAC website or in our newsletter.

If you are interested in purchasing the movie tickets or the water bottles, please complete the forms and return to the school office by November 3.

Both items make excellent gifts for children and adults, and will be delivered by the beginning of December, just in time for holiday giving.

Thanks for your continued support.

Trustee All Candidates Meeting - Wednesday, October 29th - 7:00 PM

On Wednesday, October 29, Burnaby DPAC will be hosting an all-candidates meeeting for those individuals running for school trustee. The sixteen candidates who are running for the seven school trustee positions in this election have been invited to attend. This is a valuable opportunity for the families in your school community to pose a question to this year's candidates.

In addition to questions from the floor, we would appreciate receiving questions from you by Sunday, October 19th, to assist with putting together a list of questions that could be used at this event.

You can send your question(s) to burnabydpac@yahoo.ca .

Thanks for your time and support. It is greatly appreciated.

Hope to see many of you and members of your school community on Wednesday, October 29th at 7:00 PM at Schou Education Centre.

PAC Meeting Minutes - October 2008

What a wonderful PAC meeting, thanks to all of you who could join us- Here are the minutes which were recorded by Nicole Geyer on behalf of our Secretary Elizabeth Moy who will be back for the November meeting. Thanks Nicole!

Watch for the next PAC newsletter which will have highlights of the PAC meeting, volunteer recognition, a note to gauge interest in additional programs like a Chess Club or a Computer Animation workshop and a tip or two on recess and lunch ideas that are healthy and easy to put together- all great ideas that came out of this meeting.

Continue to read the PAC board for complete details on community and DPAC activities and we look forward to seeing you all at the next PAC meeting where in addition to reports we will be reviewing a new playground concept and having guest Louise Rush who will help us determine the next wave of after school activities for our children at our school offered by Burnaby Parks and Recreation.

Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate and for everyone- may you have a safe and restful long weekend.

Today is Walk to School Day

IWALK DAY Wednesday, October 8, 2008

www.iwalktoschool.org

International Walk to School events raise awareness about the importance of walking for day to day journeys in our communities. This worldwide event encourages schools to organize fun walk to school celebrations for a day, a week or the entire month. Canadian schools have celebrated walk to school events since 1998. Forty countries on all six continents celebrated iwalk 2007. Here in B.C., 600 B.C. schools participated in every geographic region of the province.
International Walk to School events inspire the world to

Writers Workshop

The Writers Workshop

presented by Bryan Gidinski

Monday, April 14, 2008

6:30 pm – 8 pm at Chaffey Burke School

History has taught us that the pen is mightier than the sword, so here’s a chance for parents and students (grade 1 – grade 7) to participate in an exciting WRITING WORKSHOP.

Led by our very own grade 5/6 teacher, Mr. Gidinski, parents will receive tips to help their children improve their writing skills. You will learn some strategies to try out at home to encourage your child to write in fun and meaningful ways, and develop good writing skills. You will also see how students are assessed using the performance standards.

Mr. Gidinski will offer lots of fun activities that parents and child(ren) can do together. Come for some laughter and learning. Help your children become stronger writers. It’s a lifelong skill.

We welcome everyone to attend the Workshop, but space is limited. Register by filling out the form and return it to the office by April 11. We encourage parents where English is not their first language to attend as well, as we will be providing a minimal level of translation.

Babysitting will be provided for preschoolers and kindergarten students.

Playground Grant

We are the proud recipient of a $17,000 playground grant from the BC Gaming Commission. This is very exciting! We can continue with our plan to purchase equipment for phase 2 of our primary playground. Hopefully, we can have the new equipment installed over the summer, ready for September. We’ll keep you posted.

I want to thank everyone for their continued support, as we focus on a project that means so much to our children.

SEISMIC UPGRADES MAKE CHAFFEY-BURKE ELEMENTARY SAFER

The Province has approved $2.9 million for seismic upgrades to Chaffey-Burke elementary school to ensure that the learning environment is safe for students and staff, Burnaby-Willingdon MLA John Nuraney announced today.

“These seismic upgrades are part of the Province’s $1.5-billion dollar plan to prepare our schools in the event of an earthquake,” said Nuraney. “Chaffey-Burke elementary has been an integral part of the Burnaby community for decades, and these improvements will ensure it continues to be for years to come.”

The school’s gymnasium and classrooms will undergo seismic improvements, which include:

· Strengthening the walls with new concrete walls;

· Reinforcing existing concrete masonry walls and foundations; and

· Improving connections between the roof, walls and foundations.

“This seismic work will ensure students and staff continue to have a safe place to learn and work,” said Education Minister Shirley Bond. “This is part of our commitment to upgrade the highest priority schools as quickly as possible.”

Construction on the two-storey school is expected to begin in the spring of 2008 and be completed in the spring of 2009. Three portables will be used as temporary classroom space for the students of Chaffey-Burke elementary during the upgrade.

“We are so pleased to learn that our school will be seismically upgraded,” said Burnaby board of education chair Kathy Corrigan. “The safety of our students and our staff is very important, and these upgrades will certainly make us better equipped to handle a seismic event.”

Since 2001, the Province has spent over $1.1 billion to complete 26 new schools, 35 replacements, 144 additions and 25 renovation projects across British Columbia. By the end of 2008-09, the Province will have invested more than $2.8 billion in school capital and maintenance projects across the province.
