Give the gift of skiing/snowboarding this holiday season

Une version en français suivra

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NOVEMBER 2010
Contact: Natalie Dalzell
Tel. 705-445-9140
Canadian Ski Council

Give the gift of skiing/snowboarding this holiday season.
Shopping for your kids just got easier!

Get a SnowPass for your 4th or 5th grader and give them the gift of skiing/snowboarding this winter

Christmas is just around the corner and soon everyone will be scrambling to pick up the perfect gifts for their kids. This year, why not give your 4th or 5th grader the opportunity to learn a new and exciting winter sport?

For the past fourteen years the Canadian Ski Council (CSC), in partnership with Forzani has given nearly half a million children an easy and affordable way to learn skiing and snowboarding, The CSC's Grade 4 and 5 SnowPass program allows kids (or those born in 2000 or 2001) all across Canada the opportunity to give winter sports a chance with up to three free ski passes for each and every participating ski area in the province and region where they live, providing them with an opportunity to ski or snowboard hundreds of times over the winter season. And this year with the introduction of the new affinity card, the SnowPass just got better!

"Skiing and snowboarding are an excellent way to keep our kids happy, healthy and active through the long winter months," says Colin Chedore, President of the CSC "An average child can burn up to 600 calories an hour, not to mention the sheer joy and exhilaration they'll feel picking up a new sport."

So how do you get your child a SnowPass? It's easy! Visit us online at www.snowpass.cawhere you have two different choices for enrollment. You can upload your child's picture, enter your payment and their proof of age, or our printed option that allows you to fill out the information, print the application to mail in to the Canadian Ski Council with a photo, proof of age and payment ... all for a one-time administration fee of $20 plus taxes. Signing up online is the quickest and easiest way to apply for your child's Grade 4 & 5 SnowPass card. SnowPass cards will be mailed straight to you just days after your application has been processed! SnowPass applications are also available through elementary schools and inside Sport Chek, Sport Mart, Sports Experts and Intersport stores across Canada.

Depending on where you live in Canada, each applicant will receive either an Eastern or Western SnowPass card. The Western SnowPass card is valid at 59 ski areas and is for children residing in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Yukon Territories. The Eastern SnowPass card is valid for Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada at 93 ski areas. With ski areas participating across Canada, families will not have to travel far to put this SnowPass to use.

Grade 4 and 5 SnowPass information and applications are available online at www.snowpass.ca or www.passeportdesneiges.ca.

For more information on the Grade 4 and 5 SnowPass program, contact the Canadian Ski Council, tel: 705-445-9140, e-mail: info@skicanada.org, web: www.snowpass.ca

Chinese Chit-Chat " New Adult English Conversation Session"

Dear Friends:
Thank you for all your kind support to our Chaffey-Burke Chinese Chit-Chat Committee!
Last year, we held speeches on different interesting topics, hosted the Chinese New Year celebration and successfully encouraged many parents to pick up some volunteer work at school.
This year, we plan to do the same, and we are thankful for your continuing support.
A new school-year has begun. We would like to invite you to join us again for chit-chats.
This time, we will also include a time for us to focus on our daily English conversations.
The chit-chat and the new "Adult English Conversation Session" will not only increase our opportunities for more interactions among our children, parents and teachers, but also help build our confidence in speaking English with friends and teachers! We look forward to seeing all of you in our first meeting!

Important New Resource - IEP Guide

BCCPAC is pleased to attach a copy of our latest publication, “Individual Education Plans: A Guide for Parents”. This handbook is a collaborative project of BCCPAC and authors, Catherine Abraham and Joyce Gram.

The handbook was written in response to parent requests for information that would help guide them through IEP meetings. It is a plain language document, and contains many ideas and tips for parents in working collaboratively with their schools.

At this time, there are no hard copies available, but you can forward the document to anyone and everyone, and it may be freely reprinted with acknowledgement to BCCPAC and the writers. It is posted on our website at www.bccpac.bc.ca and you are welcome and encouraged to provide a link on your website.

We welcome (info@bccpac.bc.ca) any questions, comments or other feedback you may have to offer. Thank you for your cooperation and assistance in sharing this resource with parents.

Coming soon

Looking for few good men or women – PAC Election June 7

You don’t need to be a naval officer but you do need to be interested in getting involved at Chaffey. Are you looking for an excuse to get out of the house a few nights a year? If so, we’d like your name and number. We have several positions on our PAC up for election this year and we’re counting on a new group of parents to step up to these roles:

PAC Co-chair
Treasurer
Secretary
Two Members at Large

Please consider a role on PAC. The parents retiring from PAC this year have been involved for many years. We thank them for their invaluable contributions. Now is the time for parents with younger children at Chaffey to get involved. If we do not have these positions filled, it’s very possible that Chaffey-Burke will no longer have a PAC to support our children’s social and educational experience at Chaffey. That is not something we want to happen but we do need a few “good” parents to take action.

Please call Mary MacKillop (604.439.1671) or Elaine Dun (604.431.8895) for more information.

Message from Burnaby DPAC

We really need your help! We have just a few more spots to fill and need help getting the word out to all parents. Please send to your Chairs and parent volunteers. Thank you.

Dear Parent Volunteers:
Thanks to so many volunteers who have come forward. We are in need of parent volunteers for the last few dates now. Would you be interested in participating at a school visit? Details can be found attached with the
list of times and dates. Please be sure to pass along this invitation to all the members of your SPC and any other parents. School visits give parents an excellent opportunity to network, see other best practices and a
fresh perspective. This is a great opportunity - which is available to all parents - to learn and share what is happening in another school. Please let us know ASAP which one(s) you would be interested in volunteering for.

Please send the dates you are available and your child(ren)'s school(s) to spc@burnabydpac.com.
Thank you.

Fun, free and educational activity for students

Dear Teachers/Program Directors/Community Partners,

I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce Animal Grossology, an exciting and uniquely educational exhibition at Metropolis at Metrotown.  Adapted from the best-selling children’s series Grossology written by author and science teacher Sylvia Branzei, Animal Grossology brings to life all the gritty and gross facts on some of nature’s most disgusting critters.

Animal Grossology exhibition features; imaginative animated characters from the book and hands-on interactive challenges that engage visitors in a larger-than-life look at nature’s blood sucking, vomit-munching, slime making and dookie loving creatures. Fundamental educational content is captured through easy to read, giant 3-D book walls.  The entire atmosphere interacts and entertains with a high-energy approach to science.

Animal Grossology will be in Metropolis at Metrotown from May 15 to August 22, 2010.  With the school year coming to an end, this may be a great last field trip for your class and a fun adventure for summer programs.
Complimentary guided school and group tours are available upon request. The info is appropriate for K-7. The tours are 30-45 minutes in length and teachers and students will receive  takeaways, including student activity sheets, for further gross adventures.
If you would like to learn more about this fun, educational exhibition or book a tour please Kristy Slough at 604.630.3364 or kslough@ivanhoecambridge.com

March 1 is Ready, Set, Get Involved Night at Chaffey

Parents/Guardians,

Have you ever wondered what goes on at the monthly Parent Advisory Council (PAC) meetings? Well, your curiosity can be satisfied on Monday, March 1 as we welcome you to a special evening at Chaffey. All parents/guardians are invited to come meet Principal Kathie Cornell and Head Teacher Franka Raynier, who will report on what's going on at the school and provide you with 101 reasons for getting involved at Chaffey.

In one hour, you can learn about the many special programs that Chaffey volunteers are involved in and how they help enrich your child's development at Chaffey. You can also decide which ones you might be interested in helping out with in the future. Our volunteers make our school special, and the more the merrier. Don't let language be a barrier. It's also never too late to get involved. There are many opportunities to help out and socialize, even if English is not your first language. We welcome everyone!

The meeting starts at 7pm and will run until 8pm in the school library. Refreshments and babysitting will be provided.

Cheers,

Mary MacKillop and Elaine Dun

Parking

The Chaffey-Burke Parent Parking Patrol is reminding parents and students the importance of respecting all traffic rules and bylaws in the school area. The school was built many years ago, and not designed to accommodate the increase in vehicle traffic. Therefore, the responsibility of keeping all our students safe is shared by everyone in the Chaffey-Burke community. Please review the following:
1.       Walk whenever possible. If you do drive, please drop your child off earlier to avoid traffic jams at 9 am.
2.       Pick up/drop off your child in the designated areas only. Respect the “No Stopping” zone and do not stop your car in the middle of the street.

Earthquake Preparedness Volunteers Urgently Needed

Dawayne Wurtz, Chair of our Earthquake Preparedness Committee, is desperately seeking parent volunteers to assist him in the event of an earthquake or another emergency while our children are at school. The school has an excellent plan in place, but we still need volunteers to work with the teachers/staff to help ensure our children are safe when disaster strikes. The situation in Haiti has shown us the importance of being prepared and having volunteers available. Please volunteer your time by calling Dawayne at 604-734-1045 or 778-385-1045.

If you have not yet returned your Earthquake Preparedness form to the office ($3/child or $5/family) please do so now.

We are all grateful no one was injured but the slow and expensive process of rebuilding begins. We are asking for help to assist this family in their time of need. Cash or cheque donations are gratefully being accepted at the school office. If writing a cheque please make payable to Chaffey Burke Elementary School and have the memo line read; family support. All proceeds will go directly to the family and all donations will be incredibly appreciated!
